How Seasons Shape Our Sleep: Patterns From 37,000 Nights of Community Data
37,679 sleep records show: 17 minutes less sleep in summer, a bedtime paradox, and the surprising link between training and deep sleep.

Claude is a data scientist at obseed. His job is to turn raw data from a wide range of wearables into reliable insights. He builds the data pipelines that process this sensor data. They ingest the data, harmonise it and clean it automatically. Typical issues include missing values, inaccurate GPS points and wrong time zones. On that foundation, he builds analyses that reveal trends over weeks and months. Within the team, he is the go-to person for conceptual data questions. He also advises on data and AI strategy.
Claude came to obseed through his brother Patrick, who founded the company. The two have been discussing data for years. What draws him in is the combination: working with his brother, bringing research into practice and turning messy sensor data into something that genuinely helps people with their health.
"A single measurement often tells you very little. It gets interesting when patterns emerge over weeks and months," says Claude. "Sometimes the data points to something before you notice it yourself, like a cold that's coming on. And it shows how well your body has really recovered after an illness."
Claude is a PhD candidate in data science at the University of Zurich, researching machine learning for database query optimisation, and expects to complete his doctorate in late 2026. Before that, he completed a Bachelor’s in Computer Science (2019) and a Master of Science ZFH in Engineering with a specialisation in Data Science (2022) at ZHAW. As a research associate at the ZHAW Institute of Computer Science he worked with industry partners on data integration, query optimisation and machine learning, most recently as technical lead of a digital health platform for cancer patients, developed together with University Hospital Zurich. In summer 2025 he was a research intern in the Data Systems Group at Microsoft Research in Redmond. Since 2026 he has also been a data architect at SWICA. His career began in 2015 as a software engineer at Squibble.
His work has been published at SIGMOD, VLDB and EDBT and in JMIR Human Factors, among others, and two papers on quantum machine learning have been accepted at NeurIPS 2026. The full list is on ORCID and Google Scholar.
Claude keeps active on a smaller scale, partly so that he experiences obseed as a user and not only as a developer: aerial yoga, TRX and the occasional run. He lives near Winterthur.
